Abnormal cardiac rhythm that is characterized by rapid, uncoordinated firing of electrical impulses in the upper chambers of the heart ( HEART ATRIA). In such case, blood cannot be effectively pumped into the lower chambers of the heart ( HEART VENTRICLES). It is caused by abnormal impulse generation.

AF can be classified as either a
1. first-detected episode or
2. recurrent AF (> 2 episodes),
and further subclassified as
3. paroxysmal (self-terminating, usually < 24 hours),
4. persistent (sustained > 7 days), or
5. permanent.
AF becomes permanent when cardioversion is unsuccessful or has not been attempted.
