Unconscious adult patients with spontaneous circulation after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest should be cooled to 32°C to 34°C for 12-24 hours when the initial rhythm was ventricular fibrillation. In a European study, 75 of 136 patients in the hypothermia group had a favorable neurological outcome at 6 mths compared with 54 of 137 in the normothermia group [RR] 1.40 [NNT]=6.
In an Australian study, 21 of 43 patients treated with hypothermia had good neurological function at discharge compared with 9 of 34 in the normothermia group (RR 1.85, NNT=4). refl.in/jb
