To test the catheter position:
If using low dose/concentration (eg 0.125% ropivicaine 1-2 ml) in the intrathecal space you would rarely expect a motor block.
Testing the catheter with 5-10ml 0.125% ropivicaine would reveal an intrathecal catheter by resulting in a motor block.
