Continuous positive airway pressure
A technique of respiratory therapy, in either spontaneously breathing or mechanically ventilated patients, in which airway pressure is maintained above atmospheric pressure throughout the respiratory cycle by pressurization of the ventilatory circuit. In acutely unwell patients requiring CPAP via facemask to support ventilation, most patients will tolerate pressures commencing at 8-10cmH20, titrating up to effect to 16-18cmH2O as required.
