Needle technique: cannula connected to giving set connected to oxygen tubing. Pressure release is via a hole cut in tubing, removing a removable port, or inserting syringe barrel into non-removable port

If using a jet ventilator or connecting to an oxygen outlet ensure a patent upper airway to allow for release of high pressures Keep an LMA or jaw support in place where possible.

Surgical technique: Scalpel for longitudinal incision through skin & transverse incision through cricothyroid membrane. Leave the scalpel in position to keep the tract open and replace with artery forceps. Blunt dissect with artery forcep and insert the ETT, taking care to not insert it too far (as insertion point is already near the carina)

Surgical: (Scalpel bougie technique).
1. Scalpel incision through cricothyroid membrane,
2.twist scalpel 90 degrees and keep insitu to maintain tract.
3. Insert bougie and railroad ETT.
