Synthetic structural analogue of the endogenous hormone arginine vasopressin. Used to reduce urine production in patients with central diabetes insipidus and to promote the release of von Willebrand factor and factor VIII in patients with coagulation disorders such as type I von Willebrand disease, mild hemophilia A, and thrombocytopenia. Desmopressin is not effective in the treatment of hemophilia B or severe hemophilia A.

Desmopressin may cause water retention. In 67 patients given desmopressin before adenotonsillectomy, three had significant postoperative hyponatraemia, and one had a fit (Allen et al 1999 refl.in/io).
