Failure of renal water resorption due either to reduced production of vasopressin (Neurogenic diabetes insipidus) or reduced sensitivity to vasopressin (Nephrogenic diabetes insipidus). Anesthetic considerations are related to risk of hypovolaemia, hypernatremia, and hypokalemia. First line of treatment for neurogenic diabetes insipidus is resuscitation with 5% dextrose as tolerated by the cardiovascular system, and then DDAVP if required. Correct serum Na at a rate no quicker than 0.5mmol/hr. #ref #improve refl.in/hg
