The priority on recognition of the unexpected difficult laryngoscopy is maintaining patient oxygenation.
Ask yourself, can you ventilate?
If so, relax, you have time to problem solve.
If not, you have a can t-intubate-can-t-ventilate scenario which shortens your available time to achieving a definitive airway or waking the patient.
