Clinical procedure that involves insertion of a gastric endoscope under sedation or general anaesthesia and injection of contrast into the ampulla of vater to visualise the biliary tree. If required, a sphincterotomy will be performed and removal of any obstruction may be attempted.
Patients undergoing ERCP usually present with obstructive jaundice, biliary sepsis, or malignancy.

Fiberoptic endoscopy designed for duodenal observation and cannulation of VATER'S AMPULLA, in order to visualize the pancreatic and biliary duct system by retrograde injection of contrast media. Endoscopic (Vater) papillotomy ( SPHINCTEROTOMY, ENDOSCOPIC) may be performed during this procedure.
