Limited ultrasound examination directed solely at identifying the presence of free intraperitoneal or pericardial fluid. Indicated in trauma patients presenting with a history of abdominal trauma, are hypotensive, or are unable to provide a reliable history because of impaired consciousness due to head injury or drugs and is used as decision making tool for identifying the need for laparotomy. 1. perihepatic,
2. hepato-renal,
3. perisplenic spaces, as well as the
4. pelvis and
5. pericardium.

If the FAST is positive or indeterminate, and the patient is haemodynamically stable a CT scan of the abdomen and pelvis is indicated.

If they are hemodynamically unstable with a positive or indeterminate scan they should proceed to theater for a laparotomy as soon as possible.
