A post hoc, follow-up study of patients with traumatic brain injury enrolled in the SAFE Study was published in 2007. Comparing albumin with saline for intravascular fluid resuscitation in the ICU, higher mortality rates were observed among patients with severe traumatic brain injury who received 4 % albumin than patients who received saline. refl.in/e6

There is considerable individual variation in the duration of albumin's effect on plasma volume. In some patients the plasma volume can remain elevated for some hours, although in critically ill patients, albumin can leak out of the vascular space in substantial amounts at an unpredictable rate. refl.in/eq
