Assess for risk of aspiration. If patient is unfasted, unwell, presents with a bowel obstruction, GI hemorrhage, or is otherwise at elevated risk of aspiration, perform a rapid sequence induction (or awake fiberoptic if at risk of difficult laryngoscopy). Consider passing a nasogastric tube in bowel obstruction.
