Children have relatively prominant adenoidal tissue that may bleed with minimal trauma.
Topical vasoconstrictors such as co phenylcaine-forte and warming the NPA may help reduce this trauma

In sizing the NPA, choose one that reaches from the lateral margin of the nose to the tragus of the ear.
