The aims of PETS are:
- to provide a service giving advice about the resuscitation of critically ill children to doctors, nurses, hospital and ambulance staff outside the Royal Children's Hospital (RCH)
- to make the resources of paediatric intensive care available to severely ill children all around Victoria by offering them safe, expert interhospital transfer to the paediatric intensive care units at the RCH or the Monash Medical Centre.

In the event of a poisoning or drug overdose it is the responsibility of the referring team to speak to the toxicologist or poisons help-line-victoria for advice before speaking to PETS.

When arriving at any emergency department with a patient, the PETS team should first present to the triage nurse first (via the ambulance entrance) to be given further instructions.

Helicopter retrieval is appropriate if road transport is likely to take over 1hr, or the patient's condition merits urgent transfer. If the distance is more than 150km outside of Melbourne however, a fixed wing transport will be required.

Make sure the PETS team have a photocopy of all notes, and in particular, medication chart, before they leave the hospital in which the patient is being picked up from.
Not having the medication chart will make it difficult to continue management on arrival at the destination hospital.
