The goal is to clinically differentiate between postpartum compression neuropathies and nerve damage related to peripartum neuraxial procedures. If there is concern about spinal root or spinal chord compression following a neuraxial procedure (spinal or epidural), urgent discussion with a neurosurgeon and MRI or CT spine is indicated.

Most common peripartum compression nerve injuries include:
Lateral femoral cutaneous nerve of thigh (compression at the tensor facia lata at the inguinal ligament resulting in pain over lateral aspect of thigh);
Femoral nerve (mixed motor and sensory deficit in the femoral nerve distribution);
Peroneal (from compression by stirrups or prolonged squatting resulting in a foot drop);
Obturator (medial thigh pain and adductor weakness). refl.in/kb

Most compression neuropathies should resolve over several weeks. Consider referral to a neurologist if symptoms persist beyond this. #ref
