Vitamin K is required for carboxylation of glutamate residues in proteins that play physiological roles in coagulation and bone metabolism. It is a fat soluble vitamin that is obtained through dietary intake of foods such as green leafy vegetables. It's predominant therapeutic role includes restoration of normal levels of coagulation factors 2, 7, 9, and 10 in the context of chronic liver disease and warfarin therapy.
